A sleepless Scary Night in Ubud, Bali

Many times, I could not sleep whenever I am in a new place though that is due to excitement or crazy head for next day planning. But never lost my sleep because of fear of paranormal thought, that one time I was in a tour with my friends and stayed in a house in unknown place. My friend was so frightened that through the window there is a cemetery. And day the next day we discovered that that is just a beautiful garden by the next door.

Graha moding

Graha ModingVilla resort

Anyway, in recent Bali trip I could not close my eyes for a moment. I am not a crowd loving guy so that I always try to try to avoid rush area and find some peace and calm. Last time I was in Nusa Dua so this time to save few bucks and get new experience booked hotel in Kuta. But staying two days there I felt like I need an escape to somewhere into nature. Next in search of peace I booked a villa in Ubud, exactly not in Ubub central but somewhere in remote tribal village. I did not know how far remote the tribal village I was enthusiastic about. Everywhere in Bali there are odd looking sculpture of their God or religious figure, I was so scary staring at them. Well, after driving through out Ubud road still there is no sign of our destination, crossing Ubud central our taxi still driving through the Jungle, up and down hill track. I noticed driver is following his GPS that means even he does not know about the place w are heading for. At last, we have reached to a tribal village, at the entrance there were huge crowd we could not even move ahead. I saw there were many people sitting with many small items and food cart then I realized it a tribal village carnival. By making some space our car moving ahead and then I saw that GPS notifying us we just left behind the destination. But neither of us seeing any gate for the villa, again we took a U-turn and asking locals driver confirmed that the gate is in the right side at the crowd. Finally, we have reached Our Destination Graha Moding Villas but I was little upset that we come here to spend some calm time but here lots of noises.

Well I thought the crowd will be back home at the evening and then everything will be alright. My driver was unloading luggage’s and asked me smiling “Are you sure going to stay here? “I saw of course we made the booking here.  Paying the driver, I went to the reception if there any formalities to complete, I was wondered to see the reception is so ordinary like homestay places. Meanwhile, my wife was talking will the guy who is assisting us there regarding what’s happening out there. Then the guy replied something we were not expecting. He said, “There is a tribal cremation ceremony” we further asked what is that mean then he replied again with his broken English “Dead body” “Fired, burned here “one hour ago” hearing that I just realized what the hell he just said? And now I am clear even why the driver asking us about to stay here. To keep my wife calm I said hey don’t worry he doesn’t know English and could not answer our question accordingly.

tribal prayer

By Check-in into my room I went outside at the balcony I saw right beside the boundary wall there some they burned earlier, also there are some hanging bamboo rack. From far away looks like there might be kept some corps wrapped with white cloths. I have heard about many cremation rituals of preserving corps instead of burning or burring.

At the evening, we went outside to walk into tribal village and entered their carnival. We could not dare to walk close to the burner side also as outside we are not aware of their rules and regulation so better stay away. They were staring us with popping eyes we are amazed too, but could not make any conversation as no one there to understand English.

After sun goes down we went back to our cottage and closed all windows and doors tightly jumped into the bed. Since heard about the ceremony still those words flying into my hear “Deadbody””Burn””Cremation” I closed down my eyes and not to think of them. Then suddenly people outside started to play their drums and chanting their prayers. I looked all inside the room and noticed there is no more TV, Wi-Fi or even Intercom to call receptions in emergency. The Interior was truly natural. I told myself this night sleep-fairy not going to come in my room. We had an early morning flight so tried to keep eyes closed. But it did not work!

Being Minimalistic makes Travel Easy

It differs how you prefer to travel in an alien place, that might be luxurious or roaming with basics. I always prefer basics because from many experiences I come to the result that bringing all stuff I need a daily life creates huge load while traveling in a new place. We think we better keep everything in our backpack to use whenever or where ever we need them. But seriously that’s really unnecessary and we can avoid those things if we think positive. If you prioritize your comfort on a journey you might lose the real taste of being free from daily life.

Just think is this really necessary to take all of your cosmetics or toiletries or even your best shoes and expensive perfumes when you are on a trip? In my sense? you don’t even need to bring your toothpaste because you can manage them around your stay at any time. Also, do you check Foursquare while walking in an unknown place to check best reviews? but it might happen that best local restaurant not even listed in Foursquare and missed it. Try to explore best of best when you are about to know the local culture, cuisine or attractions. Don’t just rely on online resources make your lifetime experience at offline.

To get complete taste of being nomad walk on your way rather than some pre-designed  travel rout some people already experienced earlier. Why not make your own rout to explore something new, experience something new. Start your journey with as much less things you need to move on, collect whatever you need from the street.

Leave luxury behind, trust me you will find uncountable love and life on the way.

Walking on the Great Wall of China

It was amazing experience to walk on a historic wonder for the first time. While I was in Beijing just to put my footprint on one of the seven wonders visited Mutianyu Great wall of China.

Visit China was one of my mesmerizing experience ever because it was totally different from traveling other countries around the world.  Big challenge was the language barrier, almost no one speak English in China. Even officer in the front desk of Five start hotel barely speak the global language fluently.

After little hurdle managed to get China Visa from the consulate in my country. Then booked my flight and started planning the trip in short time. I used Google to get most of the information about traveling in China. I took a flight to Dhaka –  Guangzhou and landed there in the morning. As it was my first visit in China I got several questions from the officers in immigration. Once its done took a taxi and went to the hotel. At the beginning it was hard to move in the mysterious land. I was few days in Guangzhou then visited Guilin and then finally Beijing.

I made my decision to visit Beijing while I was in Guilin, because I thought it will be big sin if I miss to walk in Great wall even I am in China. I booked the flight with local flight booking site and hotel with

My flight was so early morning and was curious enough to take taxi to the airport, even I could not sleep as scheduled taxi pick up through hotel front desk. I got the taxi and arrived in the airport before check in counter opened. Got my breakfast in the departure gate lobby as complementary breakfast prepared for me by the hotel. I was watching outside while in the flight to the Beijing, barely I could see but I was enjoying. Once we were in sky of Beijing suddenly I got hopeless to see the green-less brown sandy ground below. The Flight landed and was it totally freaking dry weather here but could not expedite the freezing temperature outside because it was sunny day. I am from a country where always weather in between 30-40 degree Celsius so -5 degree Celsius was freaking cold to me. By the way I took the taxi to the hotel but i couldn’t manage to make understand my driver the place as he was zero level English known. Then he started their Chinese app and follow the map.

After check-in i started my walk to the known in Beijing city,  and explored near Starbucks  which was 20 mins walk from my hotel. Also collected some groceries from 7 eleven. While got back to my room booked Great wall tour. There were many options to choose also many destinations to check the Wall. I made some research over internet about which part is good to visit. I found the Mutianyu part is not over crowded and still having original structure.

In the next day the tour bus picked me from the hotel along with other travelers. I was counting time to get the first glimpse of the historic relics. Meanwhile was watching funny commentaries from tour girl in her Chinglish explanation.

Finally we arrived at the destination where we checked in the ticket counter and took hanging lift to get to the top of the wall. I was so exciting to keep my foot on the wall, it was like winning the world to me. The temperature was freezing there but I felt warmth inside. I started my climb and realized it’s not that much small distance to go once tomb to another. I did not stop my walk but after a while I started to sweat inside but when took off my jacket again was freezing. I climbed hundreds of steps and took rest for a while and again walk. Once I felt hungry took a rest and got my launched given by the tour operator. I made the mistake, I could not walk fast after having meal so stop climbed the steps.

The get down part was so exciting, it was a slide like in a amusement park. At first I was afraid to fall from the track but the track was designed with good security measure. I felt like a child and screaming so loudly with happiness inside. Finally get in the bus the started back way.

In the mid way tour operator took us to a local tea shop where enjoyed tea show by the sales girl. Nobody bought any tea so the girl was happily disappointed. After two hours we have reached the town and took off from the bus. The guide was asking for some tips but not of us was convinced so she was upset too.

The journey still remains in my head whenever I see the photo taken meanwhile the tour.

Darjeeling – Daughter of mountains

The trip to the Darjeeling not pleasant to me as I have hightphobia, but enjoyed the atmosphere at the hill top city. Darjeeling is situated at high altitude of eight thousands to twelve thousands from the sea level.

We started our journey from Kolkata, West-Bengal by flight to the small airport Bagdogra. After landing we took a bargain taxi from outside airport to Darjeeling through Shiliguri town. first it was ground road for one hour then started climbing the hill road. I was in panic as the ground was getting far away from the car window while I was watching the distance, also the track was so narrow. Barely another car was able to pass but the driver was expert on his steering so we were climbing high rapidly. After few hours of drive we took a break in a road side restaurant to have some snacks and tea.

When have reached to the Darjeeling city it was dusk and street lights were turned on. We paid the bill and again started climbing the stairs of our hotel as it was in high from the ground. The weather was so cool and we were freezing when we went out to have some food for the night. The hotel manager informed us that every shop here get closed down early. We walked to the city center and got a good restaurant there “Hasty tasty”

Next day we spent time in hotel’s fire place to read books, walking on the streets, having finest tea and snacks in the town. When got back to the hotel we booked our next day trip to the Tiger hill to watch Sunrise on the wall on Kanchanjhanga a part of the Everest.

At the early morning around 4 AM the car picked us and started journey towards Tiger hill by hill road. We have reached Tiger hill at Morning 6 AM and saw big crowd on cars and thousands of people. We took coffee from the street hawker and climbed Tiger hill and wait to sunrise. Suddenly I felt  bone shaking freezing cold. The temperature here far colder than the city.

After 20 minutes waiting got the first glimpse of egg yellow sun was rising. And the other side golden ray was shining on the wall of kanchanjhanga. the moment was truly magical  which can’t be explained through any word. I used my long distance zoom lens of my camera to get a closer look. We spent one hour there until full sun rose and spread the light all over.

We booked some other placed with the taxi package to check in, toy train station, Ghum monastery, Tibbet Museum, Tea Garden, Zoo among them. We finished our day tour before evening and again spent rest hours in the city center.
